Breaking: Fire Guts INEC Office In Awka (Photos): The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Awka, the Anambra State capital was on Tuesday afternoon engulfed by fire.
It is the latest in the fire outbreak incidents that has occurred in the commission’s office over the past few days.
The fire allegedly started from a container bearing election materials dispatched to the center earlier.
According to reports, some electoral materials, including card readers dispatched to the center for the presidential and National Assembly polls were affected by the inferno.
The cause of the fire is still unknown but officials of the fire service are on standby to control the fire.
Speaking on the fire incidence, head of Public Relations Unit and voter education of the commission, Leo Nkedife confirmed the fire incidence, saying that he has also been told so.
“I am not in the office, but I have been called and told of the fire, and the story is that part of the office that got burnt is containing smart card readers,” he said.
On the cause of the fire, Nkedife remained mum, insisting that he cannot speak on that for now.
The fire inside the Anambra State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, started at about 2:10 pm.
