UNIZIK University Hostels Get New Looks

Over the years, there has been growing concerns over the bad state of hostels in most institutions of higher learning in the country. Students in these institutions have continued to bring the issues of neglect, inadequate space and dilapidated structures to the front burner.

The issue of accommodation should be of great concern to the leadership of various institutions but little or no actions are being taken to salvage the situation in most of these institutions.

Having understood the critical nature of accommodation in the university system and as well as the imperative of a conducive atmosphere for learning, the leadership of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka embarked on aggressive and total renovation of all the hostels within the campus.

Recently, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, in the company of the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Stan Udedi and some members of the Students Union Government led by their President, Comrade Joseph Okafor embarked on hostels’ facility tour to assess the level of renovations done so far in the hostels.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the tour, Prof. Ahaneku expressed satisfaction at the massive renovation works in the hostels. He explained that his administration runs on students-oriented policy, maintaining that it is imperative that students live in conducive atmosphere which according to him makes learning a smooth ride.

Prof. Ahaneku, who is equally the chairman, Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities noted that for students to make good grades in the University, it behooves on the Universities’ management to provide conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning. He disclosed the readiness of his administration to provide uninterrupted power supply in the University which according to him would not only take care of the reading needs of the students but equally assist in warding off dark spots within the campus for security purposes. This according to him would be completed in few months.

Prof. Ahaneku equally revealed that his administration on inception embarked on the building of four gigantic hostels. He disclosed that one of the hostels at Agulu campus has been completed, the other at Nnewi campus is undergoing finishing touches while the other two are equally nearing completion in the main campus. He urged the students to make adequate use of the facilities being provided by the University.

In his remark, the Dean of Students Affairs thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his commitment and passion towards the provision of basic necessities for the students. Prof. Udedi maintained that the unit has enjoyed great support from the Vice-Chancellor which is as a result of his student-first policy. He maintained that the unit is committed to the welfare of the students.

The Vice-Chancellor equally commissioned a footbridge which is a critical access route for students especially during rainy seasons.
