Three children and a 20 year old man were early yesterday killed in
Funtawa village of Rimi Local Government Area of Katsina State when they
were buried alive at a sand excavation site after that portion suddenly
collapsed on them.
Three of the dead, Mallam Maharazu, 20, Muhammad
Ma’aruf, 12, Muhammad Kabiru, 8 were brothers. The fourth, seven
year-old Muhammad Halliru, was assisting the brothers to excavate sand
for making mud bricks, witnesses said. The sand buried them and they
couldn’t be rescued early enough to escape death.

Sympathizers spent hours making frantic efforts to rescue them but they were all
found dead when they got to them. It was gathered that residents had
been excavating sand at the site for many years before yesterday’s
incident.
